DETAILED ITINERARY

Northern Australia and Queensland

  September 4 - 27, 2016   Length: 23 days
WAustralia has one of the most fascinating floras and faunas on earth, the products of a long and complex geological history involving both major climatic change and tens of millions of years of physical isolation from other land masses, aside from New Guinea to the north. The result is a land like no other, where marsupials reign, a myriad of parrots and honey eaters, the giant flightless emu and cassowary, lyrebirds, and riflebirds, the only Australian birds-of-paradise, live out their lives against a backdrop of stunningly diverse landscapes, from the tropical rain forests of the north east, the arid lands of much of the interior, to the eucalyptus dominated ecosystems of much of the rest.

regions of this vast country: tropical northeastern Queensland and the legendary ‘top end’ in the Northern Territory, the land where massive seasonal flooding alternates with months of drought. Between these two regions we will experience a wide range of ecosystems and see a great diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, invertebrates, and a diverse and fascinating flora. Saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, platypus, possums of various kinds, Sugar gliders, pademelons, and the iconic Frilled lizard are a few of the mammals and reptiles that will complement one of the richest assemblages of birds on earth. We will also experience the Great Barrier Reef during a day trip to Michaelmas Cay, with superb snorkelling opportunities and seabird viewing.
